Commuting to southeast Boise from Meridian, Kuna, and Nampa: what to check before you buy
Got a job lined up in southeast Boise, near Federal Way or the airport, and a home search that keeps pulling you west to Meridian, Kuna, or Nampa? You'll hear plenty of opinions about the drive. The only answer that counts is the one you get from the exact address, at the hours you'll actually commute. Here's how to test it, where to check road conditions, and what the region is studying for I-84 and transit.
If your new job is at Micron's Boise campus, the same steps apply. BrowseIdaho is not affiliated with Micron Technology.

The main way in: I-84 and the Gowen Road exit
From the west side of the valley, most drives to southeast Boise use Interstate 84. The exit for the Gowen Road and Federal Way area is Exit 57, State Highway 21/Gowen Road, according to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD).
That interchange gets maintenance work like any other. In fall 2025, for example, ITD scheduled overnight shutdowns of eastbound I-84 before Exit 57 for bridge repairs and sent traffic off and back on at the same exit. Work zones come and go, so check before you rely on a route.
Your map app may also suggest surface streets for part of the trip, depending on where you start. Try those on your test drives too, at the same hours.
How to test a commute
A commute is personal: where you start, when you leave, and how much drive time you're happy with. Run the test before you write an offer.
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Drive from the exact address | Start at the home you're considering, not just the town, and leave at your real start time |
| Drive home at your real end time too | Evening traffic can look different from the morning |
| Repeat on another weekday | One drive is a sample, not a pattern |
| Try it in winter weather if you can | Snow, ice, and fog change the drive |
| Check 511 first | Work zones and closures can change your route |
| Weigh the time, not just the miles | A shorter route isn't always the quicker one |
Moving from out of state and can't drive it yourself yet? Use your map app's "depart at" or "arrive by" setting for a weekday at your commute hours, then plan a real test drive when you visit. Buying an Idaho home from out of state covers the rest of a remote search.

What's studied or planned
These are studies and plans, not promises. Timing and details can change, so treat them as things to watch rather than reasons to buy.
- An I-84 study from Gowen Road to Mountain Home. The COMPASS 2026–2032 project list includes a 2026 study of I-84 from Gowen Road in Boise to Mountain Home, in Ada and Elmore counties. It's a study, not a construction project.
- Commuter rail, still in study. COMPASS's Let's Ride Treasure Valley evaluation (July 2025) looked at high-capacity transit options. A commuter-rail route on the Boise Cutoff, an existing freight rail corridor running from the Boise Depot on the Boise Bench to downtown Caldwell, scored highest. The memo also considered extensions toward Micron and the Boise Airport.
- A planned express bus. The same memo says a peak-period express bus route is planned to connect Nampa, Meridian, the Boise Airport, and Micron. Check Valley Regional Transit for whether it's running before you count on it.
Transit and vanpool options to check
- Bus: Valley Regional Transit runs the valley's public bus service. It announced service changes starting October 1, 2026, including reduced service in Nampa, so check current routes and schedules from your address rather than relying on an older map.
- Vanpool and carpool: ACHD Commuteride matches people with similar routes and schedules for vanpools and carpools, and its trip planner shows the options from your start point.
